Introduction to Basic Mobile Filmmaking

Course Duration – 3 hours

Course Summary
The course introduces beginners to the art of mobile journalism, and filmmaking. It equips participants with the basic skills to enable them to film confidently with their mobile phones.  Participants learn useful techniques, become familiar with video terminology, and develop the art of visual storytelling while applying professional standards.  There is a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Target Audience
This course targets anyone with an interest in using their mobile phone to shoot more professional-looking video.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Shoot better framed and composed video.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of using a mobile phone.
  • Analyse video with a more informed and critical eye.

Topics Covered
Basics of professional camerawork.
Practicalities of filming with a mobile phone.
Preparing for editing.

The number of participants can vary but between 6-10 works best for everyone to get the most value from the course.

Pre-work/Pre-requisites
Before attending this course, participants

  • Should have a basic understanding of the use of their phone
  • Should use, or have access to, an iPhone.

Mobile Journalism and Filmmaking

It equips participants with the basic skills to enable them to film confidently with their mobile phones.  Participants learn useful techniques, become familiar with video terminology, and develop the art of visual storytelling while applying professional standards.  There is a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Target Audience
This course targets anyone with an interest in using their mobile phone to shoot and edit more professional-looking video.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Shoot better framed and composed video.
  • Edit a short video.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of using a mobile phone.
  • Analyse video with a more informed and critical eye.

Topics Covered
Basics of professional camerawork.
Practicalities of filming with a mobile phone.
Basics of editing.
Discussion of available apps to further develop.

Note – Anyone attending the Introduction course who then goes on to attend the 1 day course will receive a credit towards the cost of that course as some of the content is duplicated in both courses.

Making Video News

Course Duration – 5 days

Course Summary
The course informs video journalists about the various disciplines within the industry and equips them with the basic skills and understanding necessary to produce a compelling video news story. Participants learn useful techniques, become familiar with broadcast terms, and develop the art of visual storytelling while applying professional standards and ethics.  There is a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Target Audience
This course targets video journalists with some experience of basic journalistic skills, and who now need to learn more about all aspects of video news production. It is relevant to all journalists working with video, including camera operators, reporters, and producers.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse video with a more informed and critical eye.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the different video production techniques.
  • Produce a compelling video news report.
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the video production team.

Researching and focusing a news story.
Preparing and structuring your story.
Shooting, scripting and editing your story.
Pieces to camera and presentation
Covering breaking news.
Mobile journalism techniques.

The number of participants can vary but between 10-20 works best for everyone to get the most value from the course.

Pre-work/Pre-requisites
Before attending this course, participants

  • Should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of video journalism.
  • Must EITHER have attended a basic journalism course, OR have been working as a journalist for at least one year.
